Masters and Johnson established the parameters of modern orgasm in 1966. But we are interested in the cross between the famed scene from When Harry Met Sally and the opening scene in Bladerunner where two entirely separate depictions of a female orgasm are portrayed to all who have watched. The science and technology has progressed significantly. METHODS: A review of the literature of all aspects of female orgasm were conducted including the most recent studies on primates at the University of San Diego. In addition, the textbook renderings behind the scenes of the two aforementioned movies were scrutinized. Evolution has used orgasm to train animals to adaptive behavioral ends. RESULTS: For a male, the average time to achieve an erection is about 10 seconds. A woman who masturbates can typically achieve orgasm in as little as 4 minutes whereas the actual sexual intercourse might take 10-20 minutes. On November 27, 1838 in what is now called Notebook N, a rust colored notebook of a mere 92 pages Charles Darwin states-“Sexual desire makes saliva to flow ‘yes, certainly’- curious to kiss, & almost bite, that which one sexually loves, is probably connected with flow of saliva, & hence with action of mouth & jaws…The association of saliva, is probably due to our distant ancestors having been like dogs to bitches. How comes such an association in man- it is bare fact, on my theory intelligible.” CONCLUSIONS: Orgasm was scientifically reported, but with no major details by William Masters and Virginia Johnson in 1966. It is amazing how much of this was observed by Charles Darwin. “Blushing is intimately concerned with thinking of one’s appearance, does the thought drive blood to surface exposed, face of man, neck –‘upper’ bosom in woman: like erection.” Research has identified the orgasmic center in primates and fMRI analysis has confirmed this in humans. The medial prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, hypothalamus, anterior cingulate cortex and insula are all involved. But it appears that the left anterior insular cortical region may be the prime location of “quality” of orgasm. In Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Rick Deckard (the Bladerunner) awakens by his wife’s (Iran) attached Penfield thalmic stimulator. “Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution.” Source of Funding: None © 2021 by American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails Volume 206Issue Supplement 3September 2021Page: e239-e239 Advertisement Copyright & Permissions© 2021 by American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.MetricsAuthor Information Michael Patina More articles by this author Michael Moran More articles by this author Expand All Advertisement Loading ...
