A Comparative and Critical Review of Analytical Methods for Separation and Determination of Aliphatic and Aromatic Sulfonates

I. INTRODUCTION Sulfonates are extensively used in the petroleum industry1 as flotation agents, emulsifiers, corrosion inhibitors, lubricants, etc. Sulfonates are also important because of their use in synthetic detergents which can lead to water pollution and become relevant to sewage treatment.2 As such, a review of methods which have been used in the determination and separation of aliphatic and aromatic sulfonates is of interest.

Photometric determination of dithiocarbamate residues by carbon disulphide evaluation method.

A review of analytical methods for determination of dithiocarbamate residues by carbon disulphide evaluation method was made. On basis of KEPPEL method the colorimetric step was modified. For this purpose the reaction of hydrogen sulphide with p-aminodimethylaniline in the presence of ferric and zinc ions to form methylene blue was applied. The coloured compound after a chloroform extraction was measured at 650 nm. The method gives a very high sensitivity of about 2 mug. Recoveries obtained with zineb and maneb for various crops are satisfactory.

Les polychloro dibenzo- p-dioxines

Polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (chlorodioxins) appear most frequently by heating of chlorophenols in alkaline solution specially when producing organic derivatives. Consequently chlorodioxins may contaminate several industrial chemical products largely used, for instance, as pesticides. Occasionally, chlorodioxins are also synthesized from chlorophenols or their derivatives in situ during industrial processes. Chlorodioxins are the cause of chloracne and chick edema which killed thousands of broiler chickens in the U.S.A. Furthermore chlorodioxins seem to be foetotoxic possible even for man. The present paper is the first part of our work. It is a review of the chemical and toxicological properties of chlorodioxins. We hope to publish later a review of analytical methods and the results of our analyses.

Phenylmercuric Compounds: A Review of Analytical Methods and a Proposed Polarographic Assay

Abstract A polarographic method, using pH 10 borate buffer and 0.1M KCl as the base solution, has been applied to phenylmercuric compounds. The second reduction wave given by phenylmercuric compounds is easy to measure. The limiting current is controlled by the diffusion and is directly proportional to concentration between 8 and 40 μg/ml. A sensitive test for free Hg++ will detect 3.7 μg/ml in the final test solution. The polarographic method is more specific, sensitive, and accurate than existing methods which are reviewed here. It is recommended that the method be applied to various pharmaceuticals.

Critical Review of Methods for Analysis of Oleoresins

Abstract Oleoresins represent a type of flavoring material that is being used in ever increasing quantities. On the other hand, it is a poorly defined group of products, and the majority of analytical methods used in characterizing them, such as volatile oil by steam distillation, refractive index, optical rotation, are relatively meaningless; additionally, some of the specific component analyses, such as “heat” and capsicum (organoleptic), piperine (calculated from analysis of nitrogen) in pepper, curciimin (color value) of the paprika, are inadequate in their precision and accuracy. Deficiencies of these methods are discussed, and the value of newer instrumental methods of analyses, such as infrared, visible, and ultraviolet spectrometry, gas chromatography, and thinlayer chromatography, are illustrated.
