Analysis of the social perception of a producer about the pig production system and his experience with alternative feeding

This study was carried out in the municipality of Florencia Caquetá. The purpose of the following investigation was to analyze the social perception of a producer of breeding sows, regarding the production system and their experience in the use of alternative feeds, for which the interview was used as an information gathering tool. Data was found around three important families for the producer, the first was the productive technical part, which covered everything related to the productive process, taking topics such as genetics, reproduction and hygiene. The next family was economics, dealing with topics such as marketing, inflation, the market, and profitability. Finally, the pig family, where the importance of knowledge, dedication and replicating the same knowledge was highlighted, thus understanding the motivations of the producer, how he visualizes his future production and wanting to share his knowledge with other producers who want to venture in new ways of producing bristles.Keywords: production, sows, feeding, knowledge, dedication

Economic Empowerment through the Production of Fish Pellet, Organic Fertilizers from Maggots, and Catfish Nuggets from Budikdamber in Kronggahan Hamlet, Gamping, Sleman

Sleman Regency produces the biggest waste pile, which is recorded at 701.95 tons/day, the highest among other Regencies/Cities. (www.sipsn.menlhk.go.id). National data shows that not all waste generated can be managed. Unmanaged waste is 12.4% per year. This unmanaged waste has the potential to cause significant environmental and health problems. Efforts to minimize organic waste have been carried out by Kronggahan residents, namely by utilizing waste bioconversion technology with maggot black soldier fly (BSF). Besides being able to reduce the generation of waste produced by BSF maggot, it can be used as an alternative fish feed that has economic value and high nutritional content for fish and livestock. With this technology using BSF, it can reduce organic waste by ± 70%. In addition to the use of organic waste, Padukuhan Kronggahan has also developed several activities such as the manufacture of processed ready-to-eat food products, the development of aquaponics and budikdamber (budidaya ikan dalam ember) where the crops can be an added value for food security in Padukuhan Kronggahan. The purpose of this program is to increase the carrying capacity of the community and stakeholders related to the development of Rumah Maggot to become a vehicle for education and community economic empowerment with an environmental perspective, increase community knowledge regarding community empowerment programs in environment-based waste management, foster knowledge and public awareness in maintaining and improving health to prevent an increase in the prevalence of PTM which will affect the quality of life of the community and the economic impact due to long-term treatment, increase knowledge and skills related to Making Maggot into Maggot Pellets, an alternative to processing fish and vegetables produced from budikdamber and packaging pellet products, cassava fertilizers and processed healthy food for increase the economic value and marketing methods of finished products The method of implementing this program is socialization, coordination and consolidation, preparation of educational media, and training packages that are integrated with other productive economic activities. With these efforts, it is hoped that the program will be able to socialize more broadly, be able to be duplicated or become a pilot for other regions or agencies in terms of community empowerment-based organic waste management and have economic value.

Budidaya Maggot Lalat BSF: solusi limbah dan peningkatan pendapatan masyarakat Desa Bakalan

Bakalan Village, experiencing a significant increase in organic waste production, faces challenges in waste management due to the absence of a Temporary Disposal Site (TDS). This study investigates the implementation of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggot cultivation in Bakalan Village, Purwosari Subdistrict, Pasuruan District, East Java, as an innovative solution for organic waste management and an alternative income source. This community service program was initiated to provide training and insight to the village residents about the economic potential of BSF maggot cultivation. The activity involved 46 village residents and was conducted on July 5, 2021, introducing maggot cultivation techniques and their use as an alternative feed for livestock. The results indicate a reduction in the volume of organic waste in the village and an increased awareness among the community about the economic value of organic waste. Dried and further processed maggots showed an increase in selling price from IDR 8,000 to IDR 30,000 - IDR 40,000 per kilogram. This study highlights the link between sustainable waste management and local economic development, providing insights into BSF maggot cultivation practices as an effective method to reduce organic waste and increase the income of the residents in Bakalan Village.

A Review of The Potential Applications of Propolis in The Malaysian Poultry Industry

Antibiotics are used in the poultry industry as feed additives to improve growth, prevent disease, treat sick animals, stabilize intestinal microflora, and improve growth performance. Due to the risks regarding long-term antibiotic resistance development of pathogenic bacteria in humans, the utilization of synthetic antimicrobials in livestock feed has been banned in most animal production practices. However, antibiotic prohibition in livestock can result in poor performance of the animals in terms of yield of production, quality, and health status. Therefore, it is important to find natural alternatives such as propolis to substitute for antibiotic usage in livestock feed. Propolis is a natural resin produced by honeybees. There are over 300 beneficial compounds found in propolis. It contains various bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, and others which contribute to its antimicrobial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties. Various studies have been carried out to determine the biological and chemical activities of propolis as well as its function as an alternative natural feed additive. Thus, this review focuses on propolis composition, the potential of stingless bee propolis in Borneo, its potential as an antioxidant with antimicrobial properties, and the potential of propolis as a natural feed additive for poultry.

The Effect of Supplementing White Sweet Lupine Grain Meal (Lupinus albus L.) on Blood and Milk Metabolites, Milk Yield, and Quality of Dairy Cows in Ethiopia

Feed is the cornerstone of dairy production, serving as a crucial input for sustainable milk production. This trial aimed to investigate the effect of white sweet lupine grain meal inclusion on feed intake, blood and milk metabolites, milk yield, and quality. The experimental cows had a parity of 2±0.71 (mean ± SD), a daily milk yield of 12.72 ± 0.9, and an average body weight of 412.6 ± 21.5 kg. The varying proportions of treatment diets were: 75, 50, 25 and 0% (T1, T2, T3 and T4) treatment groups respectively. Data collected during the study were subjected to analysis of variance to determine significant differences. Cows fed diet T1 showed a better dry matter (10.39 kg/day), organic matter (7.31 kg/day), nitrogen (2.42 kg/day), and NDF intakes (3.75 kg/day) that had significant difference on (p<0.05). When lupine inclusions dropped from 75 to 50 and even to 25%, the N digestibility decreased from 76.63, 70.66, and 65.6%, respectively, and the digestibility of N in all treatment diets significantly decreased (p < 0.01). Once more, cows fed T1 diet had the highest (p<0.01) plasma glucose concentration (116.81 mg/dl) among the four experimental groups. Cows fed T2 and T4 diets showed significant variation at (p<0.05) in plasma glucose levels, with values of 108.7 and 110.16 mg/dl, respectively. Cows fed T1 had relatively lower plasma beta-Hydroxybutyric acid and non-esterified fatty acid concentrations (p<0.05) than others, with mean values of 3.23 and 1.28 mg/dl respectively. The partial inclusion of white sweet lupine grain meal up to the level of 75% is highly suggested as a better alternative feed source.

Economy Circular Pengelolaan Sampah Organik Pasar di Peternakan Sapi dari Hulu hingga Hilir (Studi Kasus di Kelompok Tani Sumber Makmur, Gunung Tembak Kota Balikpapan)

Management of market organic waste in Balikpapan City is an important thing to do to reduce the burden on Manggar TPA. Organic waste, especially market organic waste, which continues to increase along with the rapid growth of the population in Balikpapan City as a buffer city for the IKN can increase the risk of environmental pollution and safety. Market organic waste can be used as an alternative feed for cattle and goats and this has been done by the Sumber Makmur Farmer Group, Gunung Tembak, Balikpapan City. In addition to utilizing market organic waste as cattle and goat feed, the Sumber Makmur Farmer Group has also managed cow manure in the form of solid and liquid into solid organic fertilizer and liquid organic fertilizer. Thus there has been a series of Economy circular which can be an alternative in overcoming the problem of market organic waste in the Balikpapan city as well as increasing economic value. The method in this study uses a descriptive-qualitative method with a design action research model or action research by observing directly to obtain information from the object of study. Discussion of this research is divided into 4 parts such us System for Utilizing Market Organic Waste as Cattle and Goat Feed, the system for utilizing solid cow manure, the system for utilizing liquid cow manure, the potential for managing cattle and goat farms based on an economy circular. The results of observations at the Sumber Makmur Farmer Group, Gunung Tembak, Balikpapan City, show that there have been livestock management activities that apply an economy circular from upstream to downstream. Furthermore, it is hoped that further and in-depth research can be carried out in terms of economy circular-based livestock management in the utilization of organic waste as animal feed so that it can provide more comprehensive information to the wider community so that they can implement this system.

Influence of extruded soybean meal with varying fat and oleic acid content on nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy in broilers

High oleic (HO) soybeans may serve as a value-added feed ingredient; providing amino acids and estimating their dietary energy value for broilers is essential. In this study, we determined the apparent metabolizable energy (AME), AME corrected for zero nitrogen retention (AMEn), digestibility, and nitrogen (N) retention of HO full-fat (HO-FF) soybean as compared to solvent-extracted soybean meal (SE-SBM), normal oleic full-fat (NO-FF) and extruded expeller (NO-EE) soybean. A total of 240 Ross-708 male broilers were selected, with eight replicates per treatment and six chicks per cage. The AME and AMEn were estimated using the difference method with a 30% inclusion of test ingredients using a corn-soy reference diet with partial and total excreta collection. The index method with partial excreta collection used titanium dioxide as an inert marker. The same starter diet was provided for all birds for 14 days, followed by the reference and assay diets for the next six adaptation days. Total excreta was collected twice a day for three days. The AME and AMEn values determined for the HO-FF and NO-FF were higher (P < 0.001) than the NO-EE and SE-SBM. The AME of SE-SBM and NO-EE were similar with both methods, but the AMEn of SE-SBM was lower than the NO-EE only with the partial collection method. The agreement between AME and AMEn values determined by partial and total excreta collection analysis was 98%. Data from the total excreta collection method yielded higher AME and AMEn values (P < 0.001) than those from the partial collection method. In summary, HO-FF and NO-FF soybean meals had similar AME and AMEn values. The HO-FF soybean had 39 and 24% higher AME and AMEn than SE-SBM. Hence, high oleic full-fat soybean meal could serve as a valuable alternative feed ingredient to conventional SE-SBM meals in broiler diets, providing additional energy while providing amino acids and more oleic acid to enrich poultry meat products.

Population Demographics of Helopeltis bradyi Waterhouse (Hemiptera: Miridae) from Three Different Locations

Helopeltis bradyi Waterhouse has been reported to attack tea plantations in Batang District and cocoa plantations in Sleman District and Kulon Progo District. Information about the life parameters of H. bradyi reared using alternative feed cucumbers in the laboratory helps pest management efforts. This study aimed to determine the life demography of H. bradyi from two plants and three different locations. The study was conducted with cohort observations consisting of gross reproduction rate (GRR), net reproduction rate (Ro), intrinsic growth (r), average generation length (T), and population doubling time (DT) of three populations of H. bradyi. Results showed that there were differences in living individuals (ax), mortality, and life duration of the three H. bradyi populations. The survival type of the three populations of H. bradyi was classified as type IV. The survival of the three H. bradyi populations were influenced by their ability to adapt to new environments. From the three populations of H. bradyi observed, Sleman population survived longer because they had adapted to the rearing environment and were able to maintain the population numbers for two generations. Demographic parameters of H.bradyi from Sleman showed gross reproduction rate (GRR) of 88 individuals/generation, net reproduction rate (Ro) of .97 individuals/parents/generation, the increase in population rate (r) of 0.02 individuals/species/day, extended duration (T) of 39.50 days, and doubling time (DT) of 40.49 days.

Alternative Feed with Fermented Kayambang to Reduce Cholesterol Levels and Increase the Antioxidant Content of Duck Eggs and Meat in Batee Puteh Village, Langsa, Aceh

Hasil survei awal yang dilakukan oleh tim pengabdian, permasalahan yang dihadapi oleh mitra peternak itik di Desa Batee Puteh, Langsa Lama, Kota Langsa, Aceh yaitu: 1) Kurangnya pemahaman mitra tentang budidaya ternak itik yang dapat meningkatkan produktivitas dan kualitas telur serta daging itik; 2) Pengeluaran untuk pakan ternak yang terbilang cukup mahal sehingga diperlukan alternatif pakan dari bahan alami. Kayambang dapat dimanfaatkan untuk bahan membuat pakan ternak yang kaya nutrisi. Solusi yang ditawarkan oleh tim pengabdian berupa: 1) Penyuluhan mengenai cara meningkatkan produktivitas dan kualitas telur serta daging itik; 2) Pelatihan dan pendampingan mitra dalam pembuatan pakan dari fermentasi kayambang. Hasil dari kegiatan yaitu mitra mengalami peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan dalam membuat pakan dari kayambang sebesar 39,3 %; tingkat kepuasan peserta terhadap kegiatan PKM yaitu sebesar 47,35 % untuk kategori sangat setuju dan 52,65 % lainnya setuju dan berharap keberlanjutan program untuk kegiatan pemberdayaan lainnya.

Impact of Feed Additives on the Growth of Gourami Fish Seeds (Osphronemus gourami)

The high market demand for gourami has led to an increase in fish farming activities. However, this fish farming activity is constrained by the spawning and breeding process. Gourami fish takes quite a long time in the seed growth phase so it is feared that it can hamper the fulfillment of gourami fish stocks in the market. Several studies have been conducted to shorten the growth time of fish seeds. One of them is in the field of feed. Modification and alternative feed are expected to contribute to science in the cultivation of gourami fish seeds. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of feeding additives to increase the growth of carp fry (Osphoronemous gouramy). The research was conducted from August to October 2019 using nets in concrete ponds. The research was conducted experimentally using the group randomized design (RAK) method carried out in 4 treatments and 4 groups. The treatments tested were the provision of additional ingredients consisting of P_1 = 15% Probiotic / Kg feed, P_2 = 0.4% Vitamin C / Kg feed, P_3 = 3% Spirulina/kg feed, P_4 = 3.25% Papain enzyme/kg feed. Observation parameters include absolute length growth, absolute weight growth, survival, and feed conversion ratio. The results showed that 3% spirulina/kg and 3.25% papain enzyme/kg had a significant effect on the rate of weight growth and growth.

Use of macroalgae as a nutritional supplement for sustainable production of ruminants: A systematic review and an insight on the Colombian Caribbean region

Exploring alternative feed sources that reduce rumen methane production while improving livestock productivity is of importance because of rising global temperatures. Colombia is exposed to extreme climate changes and the consequences of these periods of climate change are drought, erosion, salinization, floods, sedimentation and alteration of ecosystems. As a result, the livestock industry experiences significant losses due to damaged feed and reduction in productivity and reproductivity of agricultural animals. The objective of this work is to determine the global bioprospective potential of macroalgae as nutritional supplements for ruminants and their potential application in the Colombian Caribbean area. For this, a quantitative and longitudinal documentary research design was used. An exploratory bibliographical review was carried out to explain the interactions between the variables applying the PRISMA protocol. The analysis of the changes in production variables of the ruminants supplemented with macroalgae was carried out by comparing the data of the treatment groups with their respective control groups in cattle, goats and sheep. For cattle, data by algal phylum showed that brown and red macroalgae increased average daily weight gain. Data by phylum and family of algae associated with milk production showed a positive impact of dietary supplementation with macroalgae on milk production, particularly with green and red algae. In the present study, it has been confirmed that red macroalgae is the best option to produce feed supplements for ruminants because they increase milk and meat production and show a statistically significant reduction in enteric methane production in cattle. For the Colombian Caribbean region, the red algae families Gigartinaceae and Gracilariaceae are recommended to produce feed supplements for ruminants because of their high prevalence in the marine habitats.

A Numerical Investigation Concerning the Effect of Step-Feeding on Performance of Constructed Wetlands Operating under Mediterranean Conditions

The effects of wastewater step-feeding (SF) on the performance of horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (HSF CWs) are numerically investigated. The purpose is to check if this alternative feeding technique increases the ability of HSF CWs to remove pollutants. Two methodologies are used: Initially, the tanks-in-series (TIS) methodology, based on the finite volume method (FVM), is analyzed using the volumetric degradation coefficient λ. In this case, the operation of a CW is similar to a series of continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTRs) operating under steady conditions. Then, the step-feeding (SF) procedure is presented, in which the CW is operated like a plug flow reactor (PFR). For the numerical investigation, the available experimental data for five existing HSF CWs are used. The results show that SF does not improve the performance of HSF CWs in removing biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) operating under Mediterranean conditions. When the HSF CWs operate without the SF procedure, the performance is between 55 and 81% for the TIS method and 60 and 89% for the PFR method, while the ability of the CW tank to remove the BOD decreases and varies from 48 to 79% (TIS) and from 54 to 86% (PFR), respectively.

Do Poisonous Plants in Pastures Communicate Their Toxicity? Meta-Study and Evaluation of Poisoning Cases in Central Europe.

One of the possible roles of secondary plant metabolites, including toxins, is facilitating plant-animal communication. Lethal cases of pasture poisoning show that the message is not always successfully conveyed. As the focus of poisoning lies in the clinical aspects, the external circumstances of pasture poisoning are widely unknown. To document poisoning conditions in cattle, sheep, goats, and horses on pastures and to compile a checklist of plants involved in either poisoning or co-existence (zero poisoning), published case reports were evaluated as primary sources. The number of affected animal individuals was estimated within abundance classes from 0 to more than 100. The checklist of poisonous plants comprised 52 taxa. Of these, 13 taxa were deemed safe (no reference was found indicating poisoning), 11 taxa were associated with evidence-based zero poisoning (positive list), and 28 taxa were associated with poisoning (negative list). Nine plant taxa caused poisoning in more than 100 animal individuals. Zero poisoning accounted for 40% and poisoning accounted for 60% of a total of 85 cases. Poisoning was most often associated with a limited choice of feed (24.7%), followed by overgrazing (12.9%), seasonally scarce feed (10.6%), and co-ingestion of grass (4.7%). Hunger interferes with plant-animal co-existence, while zero poisoning improves it. In conclusion, poisonous plants in pastures may communicate their toxicity if the animals have enough alternative feed plants. An individual animal might utterly perceive the communication of toxicity by the plant species but be forced to ignore the message owing to a limited choice of feed options.

Review on Key Features of Infant Feeding: Human Milk and Infant Formula

Human breast milk (HBM) is the finest source of nutrition for almost all infants. Breast milk as a bodily fluid has many benefits beyond somatic cell growth, including regulation of postnatal intestinal function, immune ontogeny, and brain development. However, breastfeeding is strongly recommended, breastfeeding may not always be possible, suitable or solely adequate1. Hence, Infant formula is often an alternative source of infant nutrition when breastfeeding is unacceptable or impossible. The composition of infant formula should be as close as possible to the composition of human breast milk, both in terms of content and chemical specification2. Infant formulas try to mimic the nutritional composition of breast milk as closely as possible. A number of substitutes to milk-based formula also exist. In this article, we review nutritional information for breast milk and infant formulas to help you better understand the importance of breastfeeding and the use of infant formulas up to 24 months of age when alternative feeding is required. Pelatihan Fermentasi Daun Kering sebagai Alternatif Pakan Ternak di Desa Sumbung Kecamatan Cepogo Kabupaten Boyolali

Boyolali is known as a milk-producing city, which makes animal husbandry one of the biggest options for economic activity. Limited forage resources are one of the problems faced by breeders. This activity aims to provide fermentation training using dry leaves as an alternative animal feed. The method used is to collect dry leaves from local resources in Sumbung Village, followed by training on the fermentation process using probiotic bacteria, which has been proven to be effective in increasing the nutritional value of feed. Fermented dry leaves have an aroma and taste that livestock like, thereby increasing feed consumption. Utilizing fermented dried leaves as animal feed can be a sustainable solution for overcoming limited food sources in Sumbung Village. Apart from providing a higher-quality alternative feed, this research can also support efforts to manage dry leaf waste and encourage environmental sustainability.

The gastric mucosa of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is abundant in highly active chitinases.

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) possesses a genome containing 10 genes encoding chitinases, yet their functional roles remain poorly understood. In other fish species, chitinases have been primarily linked to digestion, but also to other functions, as chitinase-encoding genes are transcribed in a variety of non-digestive organs. In this study, we investigated the properties of two chitinases belonging to the family 18 glycoside hydrolase group, namely Chia.3 and Chia.4, both isolated from the stomach mucosa. Chia.3 and Chia.4, exhibiting 95% sequence identity, proved inseparable using conventional chromatographic methods, necessitating their purification as a chitinase pair. Biochemical analysis revealed sustained chitinolytic activity against β-chitin for up to 24 h, spanning a pH range of 2 to 6. Moreover, subsequent in vitro investigations established that this chitinase pair efficiently degrades diverse chitin-containing substrates into chitobiose, highlighting the potential of Atlantic salmon to utilize novel chitin-containing feed sources. Analysis of the gastric matrix proteome demonstrates that the chitinases are secreted and rank among the most abundant proteins in the gastric matrix. This finding correlates well with the previously observed high transcription of the corresponding chitinase genes in Atlantic salmon stomach tissue. By shedding light on the secreted chitinases in the Atlantic salmon's stomach mucosa and elucidating their functional characteristics, this study enhances our understanding of chitinase biology in this species. Moreover, the observed capacity to effectively degrade chitin-containing materials implies the potential utilization of alternative feed sources rich in chitin, offering promising prospects for sustainable aquaculture practices.

Perspectives of the use of macro- and micro elements in poultry feeding

Poultry breeding is one of the fastest growing segments of the agricultural sector in many countries of the world, including Ukraine. Currently, Ukraine ranks 8th in terms of production of eggs and broilers in the world. A sufficient amount of minerals and vitamins in the diet is the key to good production of poultry products. Feeding feed deficient in vitamins and minerals can cause numerous health problems in chickens, including death in some cases. The poultry farmer must monitor the health of the chickens every day. Therefore, the development of the practice of feeding a balanced diet with the necessary amount of minerals to prevent premature disease of poultry caused by nutrient deficiency is relevant today. In poultry farming, mineral substances are used as one of the ways to increase metabolism in birds. Mineral substances are part of the molecules of complex organic structures that participate in metabolic processes, including digestion, thereby improving the assimilation and use of feed nutrients. The lack of microelements in feed causes diseases of the joints of the limbs of poultry, a decrease in its productivity, and a deterioration in the quality of eggshells. Zinc, copper, manganese, iron, iodine, selenium, cobalt are important trace elements in the feed of broiler chickens. Therefore, the effectiveness of the use of trace elements is an actual topic of modern poultry feeding. Mineral substances are useful in poultry farming, as they provide prevention of various diseases. Organic minerals in small amounts can be added to the diet of birds, because minerals are better absorbed by the bird than mineral salts. Demand for alternative natural feed additives with mineral content is important, especially as an alternative to antibiotics. They can have a preventive effect against various diseases, participate in numerous physical and biochemical mechanisms and basic processes of growth and development. However, further large-scale research is needed for the further use of macro- and micronutrients in commercial poultry farming.

Effects of Different Inclusion Rates of Pre-Treated Rubber Seed Meal (RSM) on Physicochemical Properties of Juvenile Macrobrachium rosenbergii Feed

The present study investigated the potential of rubber seed as an alternative ingredient partial inclusion with improved nutritional value and inexpensive freshwater prawn feed. Rubber seeds are proven to have a nutritional composition such as protein suitable in animal feed. In this study, Rubber Seed Meals (RSM) were formulated using different inclusion rates of 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% Sodium Bicarbonate Treated Rubber seed (SBRS) as a partial replacement to fish meal in prawn diets, while feed without SBRS as control. The study’s objectives were to evaluate the chemical composition and sensory acceptability of the newly formulated RSM through proximate analysis, physical properties analysis and Textural Profile Analysis (TPA). Each of the analyses was performed in triplicates. The preliminary proximate analysis revealed that raw rubber seed powder contained a higher amount of crude protein (19.63%), crude fat (40.00%), crude fibre (7.20%) and metabolisable energy (4961 Kcal/kg) as compared to the SBRS powder. Among all treatments, a diet with 40% inclusion of SBRS showed the highest value of crude fat of 40.80% while with 0% SBRS has the lowest value of 27.22%. In conclusion, RSM with 20% inclusion of SBRS was found to be the most suitable diet that satisfies the nutritional needs of juvenile M. rosenbergii; due to its acceptable content of crude protein (32.70%), crude fat (31.88%), crude fibre (5.33%) and ash content (4.50%). In addition, diet with 20% inclusion of SBRS as the potential alternative prawn feed by having suitable physical properties with bulk density (0.57 g/mL) and sinking velocity (0.09 s/cm). In addition, values for hardness of the pellet were 1073 g and for cohesiveness and springiness were 1.15 and 8.46, respectively.

Preparation of Glutamine-Enriched Fermented Feed from Corn Gluten Meal and Its Functionality Evaluation.

China faces a persistent deficiency in feed protein resources. Enhancing the utilization efficiency of indigenous feed protein resources emerges as a viable strategy to alleviate the current deficit in protein feed supply. Corn gluten meal (CGM), characterized by a high proportion of crude protein and glutamine, is predominantly employed in animal feed. Nonetheless, the water-insolubility of CGM protein hampers its protein bioavailability when utilized as feed material. The aim of this study was to augment protein bioavailability, liberate glutamine peptides from CGM, and produce glutamine-enriched CGM fermented feed. We executed a co-fermentation protocol using Bacillus subtilis A5, Lactobacillus 02002, and acid protease to generate the CGM fermented feed. Subsequent in vivo experiments with broilers were conducted to assess the efficacy of the fermented product. The findings revealed that the soluble protein, glutamine, small peptides, and lactic acid contents in the fermented feed increased by 69.1%, 700%, 47.6%, and 125.9%, respectively. Incorporating 15% and 30% CGM fermented feed into the diet markedly enhanced the growth performance and intestinal health of broilers, positively modulated the cecal microbiota structure, and augmented the population of beneficial bacteria, specifically Lactobacillus. These results furnish both experimental and theoretical foundations for deploying CGM fermented feed as an alternative protein feed resource.
