Establishing Linkages between Intelligence, Emotional and Spiritual Quotient on Employees Performance in Government Sector of Pakistan

This paper aims to investigate the effect of IQ (intelligence quotient) EQ (emotional quotient) and SQ (spiritual quotient) on employee performance in government sector of Pakistan This study adopted Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory (SISRI) by D. King., Emotional quotient scale by Reuven Bar-On, Intelligent quotient factor analysis by Adrian Furnham, Religion Personality Index (MRPI) by Azimi Hamzah and Measurements of performance by Sarmiento, Beale & Knowles (2007). The data was collected from ministry, administration and directorates of Pakistan. The study administered and received all the 347 completed set of questionnaires (259 employees of grade 1-13, 72 employees of grade 14-18 and 16 employees of grade 19- 22). SEM result of IQ, EQ and SQ shows that they have the significant and positive correlation with the performance of employees. SQ improves performance if the trainings regarding it are provided. Functions of Religion as a moderator in employee job performance. This research has extended knowledge in the workplace with SQ confirm that SQ is more important than the EQ and IQ in influencing the employee performance. The empirical findings of the study shows that organizations may formulate strategies and policies to improve performance of employees by encouraging and allowing the activities of spiritual quotient in the workplace, regardless of religion and spiritual beliefs, and thus facilitate the mutual understanding and respect. This is the only study that measured the impact of IQ, EQ and SQ on employee’s performance with religion as a moderator. DOI: 10.5901/mjss.2015.v6n6s2p553

To Make or to Create? What Should Students of Design be Taught?

Introduction The cultural milieu of the present time demands creativity of the design profession.1 Smart phones, for instance, are not just better formed telephones, but a hybridized form of telephone and computer. All indications are that the trend for novel invention in the world of digital technology is going to burgeon exponentially, and with an ever-increasing pace, in the years directly ahead. In other words, the unbridled imagination, the purely visionary energy, associated with creativity is what design students seem to need to develop today. The trouble is this ideal of the liberated imagination can only be accomplished at the expense of the disciplined imagination, the combination of vision and rationality, associated with making rather than creating. In the broadest terms, this difference between design creativity and design making might be exemplified as the difference between the thinking of artists and the thinking of engineers, two notoriously opposed professions!2 Be that as it may, it is not the purpose of this paper to contrast the theories and practices of architects and engineers. The fact is, both these broad professions are immersed and engaged in the pragmatic problems of sorting out and refining the implications of thinking of their work. To do so they must think more in terms of creating designs and products and less in terms of making designs and products. It seems to be time, therefore, to consider some of the problems with instituting such a grand paradigm shift in design education. Perhaps the first thing to note is that creativity has not often been defined with any clarity or robust articulation. As Mark Batey and Adrian Furnham indicate, creativity has been used so broadly among such a wide variety of cultural commentators that it has become almost meaningless as a term that can be used in rigorous analysis.3 In fact, C. W. Taylor identifies more than sixty definitions of creativity in psychological literature.4 In other words, the current popular discourse on creativity appears to be more rhetorical than substantive. Social Justice Research: Mission, Some Prospects, and Challenges

Social Justice Research (SJR) is now embarking on its 25th year, and we are pleased to have been granted the trust to contribute to its management and development during the next 5 years. It is the official journal of the International Society for Justice Research (ISJR) and was founded in 1987 by Melvin Lerner who also was its first Editor. He wanted an international multidisciplinary orientation of the journal, and we share this ambition with him as does Clara Sabbagh, the new President of the ISJR, whose ambition is an expansion of the society to include more members from countries and disciplines that are presently under-represented. A number of outstanding scholars from different disciplines and countries have agreed to serve as Associate Editors. They are, in alphabetical order: Sarah Brosnan (Georgia State University), Jon Elster (Columbia University), Ernst Fehr (University of Zurich), Adrian Furnham (University College London), Mario Gollwitzer (Philipps-University Marburg), James Konow (Loyola Marymount University), Gerold Mikula (University of Graz), Barry Markovsky (University of South Carolina), Heather Strang (University of Cambridge and Australian National University), and Riel Vermunt (Leiden University). With these researchers the following disciplines are represented: psychology, sociology, social psychology, social neuroscience, economics, organizational science, philosophy, political science, and criminal justice/criminology. We have also updated the Editorial Board and added a number of eminent and experienced researchers who are contributing to the development of the field. The qualifications of the Associate Editors and Editorial Board members and their devotion to social justice issues guarantee high-quality, multi-disciplinary, and interesting contents of the journal.

Commentary on Furnham's Culture Shock, Berry's Acculturation Theory, and Marsella and Yamada's Indigenous Psychopathology: Being a Call to Action for Pacific Rim Psychology

The three articles in this special edition of the Journal of Pacific Rim Psychology encompass a range of approaches within cross-cultural psychology. Adrian Furnham's (2011) culture shock shows how academic psychology can be applied to, and helps to inform a popular concept. John Berry's (2011) acculturation theory demonstrates how focused theory and empirical data can align with a national agenda. Anthony J. Marsella and Ann Marie Yamada's (2011) socioconstructionist critique of mainstream clinical psychology and psychiatric practices illustrate how epistemology and indigenous psychology can challenge institutional practices. They are united in rejecting a culture-blind psychology of the mainstream. They differ by referencing largely separate but nonetheless complementary literatures on cultures of relevance to the Pacific Rim region. Taken together, these three articles combine meaningfully to illustrate how Pacific Rim psychology might benefit from having (1) a definition of itself with Hawaii and the Pacific Island Nations as the centre and hub for the broader Pacific Rim that includes East Asia and the Western American seaboard; (2) a focus on action, particularly action research and its cyclical communication process of planning, action, evaluation and feedback; and (3) an interdisciplinary orientation where interconnectedness with such institutions as mass media, government, and clinical and psychiatric practices, as well as within psychology itself, underpin and inform research practice and policy.

Varying views of beautiful bodies

Viren Swami and Adrian Furnham are both prolific writers, and have, amongst a host of other recent work, produced two largely enjoyable and informative books on physical attractiveness. The Body Beautiful is an edited collection of chapters investigating into perceptions of bodily attractiveness. The Psychology of Physical Attraction casts the net slightly wider, and aims to cover physical characteristics, as well as the social determinants and outcomes of attractiveness. Both books are notable for their attempts to include work from diverse theoretical perspectives, shoehorned into two categories: ‘evolutionary’ and ‘sociocultural’. I will briefly cover the contents of both books in turn. The contributions to The Body Beautiful concentrate, almost without exception, on female bodies. The authors have solicited chapters from several authorities on diverse aspects of body shape preferences and ideals, and loosely linked these chapters in to four themes, starting with methodological critiques of the techniques used to study such preferences empirically. One stand out conclusion to be drawn from the evolutionary minded chapters in this book is how far the Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) hypothesis appears to have fallen out of favour: repeated studies indicate that Body Mass Index (BMI) explains far more variance than WHR in attractiveness judgements. Only the first chapter, by Don McBurney and Sybil Streeter, mounts anything like a spirited defense of the importance of WHR in preferences.
