Active Four-Wheel Steering System for Zero Sideslip Angle and Lateral Acceleration Control

This paper proposes an active four-wheel steering system. It has three additional points to an active front steering system proposed by authors: 1) active rear steering to realize zero sideslip angle, 2) variable steering ratio to prevent abrupt involution at slowdown, and 3) model following sliding mode controller to become robust against the system uncertainty. Computer simulations demonstrate good maneuverability of the proposed system.

Development of Robust Active Rear Steering Control for Automobile.

A new concept for a robust active rear steering(ARS)system is presented. The system exhibits good control performance even if the vehicle parameters and / or road surface conditions are changed. This system makes the vehicle follow the desired dynamic model by state feedback of both yaw rate and side slip angle. For utilization of a noisy yaw rate sensor and maintenance of high robust control performance, a controller with frequency-dependent gain characteristics was designed by μ synthesis. For estimatation of the side slip angle using a noisy sensor, a new time-variant observer employing a frequency filter was introduced. The results of the simulation and the experimental tests prove the great effect of the new ARS system.

This system makes the vehicle follow the desired dynamic model by the state feedback of both yaw rate and side silp angle. To utilize noisy yaw rate sensor and also to maintain high robust control performance, a controller with frequency-dependent gain characteristics was designed by μ synthesis. To estimate the side silp angle using a noisy sensor, a time-variant observer applying a frequency filter is introduced. Results of simulations and actual tests prove the great effect of this new ARS control.
