Summary

Introduction

Scientific evidence has confirmed the benefits of breastfeeding to the lives of human beings. Despite the efforts made by several sectors of society to promote breastfeeding, children are not being exclusively breastfed during the first six months of life[1]. Only 34.8% of infants received breast milk during this period of life. Breastfeeding is a complex phenomenon, as it is influenced by the historical context and social and cultural determinants, in addition to variables of a physiological, psychological and volitional nature. It is not an instinctive and biologically natural act[4]
