Abstract
This article explores how the American Nebraskan landscape was challenging for the first settlers and then with their hard work and optimism how it becomes a regenerative force. The protagonist of the novel, My Ántonia (1916) believes in her land’s capacity to heal old negative experiences and its potential to reconstruct a blissful future for her. The narrator, Jim Burden knows Ántonia from childhood and witnesses her efforts to convert her rough land into a fruitful farm. Her family is also a model one; happy, harmonious with nature and they identify themselves with their land. Willa Cather depicts Ántonia as an ideal woman figure dealing with her soils with compassion.
