Abstract

UNU Monitor is a quarterly review of the United Nations University's (UNU) current research, publications and forthcoming projects in the area of global environmental change. This issue's Monitor features a report on UNU activities in the field of sustainable development in the mountainous regions of the world. In recognition of its pioneering work in this area, UNU has been invited to participate actively in follow-up processes on Agenda 21, endorsed at the Rio Earth Summit. This article is based on the UNU report given at the first Ad Hoc Inter-agency Meeting on the UNCED Follow-up on Agenda 21 Chapter 13: Sustainable Mountain Development, which took place in Rome in March 1994. Any questions or comments, please contact Dr Juha I Uitto, Academic Officer, The United Nations University, 53–70 Jingumae 5-chome, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150, Japan.
