Abstract

UNU Monitor is a quarterly review of the United Nations University's current research, publications and forthcoming projects in the area of global environmental change. ‘Global change’ research has recently come to fruition in two related endeavours: the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU), and the international Human Dimensions of Global Change Programme (HDGCP), under the direction of the United Nations University (UNU), the International Federation of Institutes for Advanced Study (IFIAS), the International Social Science Council (ISSC) and UNESCO. This issue's Monitor, compiled by the HDGCP Secretariat in Toronto in collaboration with the UNU in Tokyo, describes the HDGCP, its aims and objectives and its current activities.
