Abstract
D. Pedro I was a composer and played several instruments. He affirmed his commitment to constitutional ideals by creating, in 1821, the Hymn of the Charter, being also the author of the lyrics. Adopted as the anthem of Portugal from 1834 to 1910, it is his most widespread work. However, its best-known anthem in Brazil is the Independence Anthem of Brazil, originally called Imperial and Constitutional, written to mark the granting, on March 25, 1824, of the first Brazilian constitution. When D. Pedro succeeded his father in Portugal, in March 1826, he has established the same constitution. In both countries, they were the longest-lasting rules. This article seeks to highlight D. Pedro's musical careers, always at the service of his liberal ideas.
