Abstract

Red betel (Piper crocatum) is a plant that is often used as medicine. Red betel belongs to the Piperaceae family, grows vines with heart-shaped leaves and stems, which grow alternately from the stem and the appearance of leaves that are silvery red and shiny when exposed to sunlight. Red betel contains flavonoid compounds, alkaloids, tannins, phenolic compounds and essential oils. The results showed that the ethanol extract of red betel leaf contains active compounds such as flavonoids and phenolics. The purpose of this study was to determine the toxic effect of red betel leaf ethanol extract on Artemia salina. The method used is the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test method. The results obtained were analyzed using a probit table to find the value of LC50 (Lethal concentration). The LC50 value was obtained based on the toxicity test of the red betel leaf ethanol extract at 10 ppm. This indicates that the red betel leaf ethanol extract is very toxic to shrimp (Artemia salina) larva.
