Abstract

The analytic geometry describes algebraic formulas by the means of geometric curves and describes geometric curves by algebraic formulas. The purpose of the real number line is to give a geometric way of describing real numbers. The set of real numbers and the set of points on the real line are in one-to-one correspondence. A Cartesian coordinate system is sometimes also called a rectangular coordinate system. The Cartesian coordinate systems are helpful for giving a geometric description of equations involving two variables. The set of all solutions of an equation is called its solution set. The parallel lines have the same slope, and conversely, lines with the same slope are parallel. In many applied problems two linear equations are given and it is of interest to find values of the variables that satisfy both of the equations. There are two methods for solving systems of two linear equations in two unknowns: substitution and elimination.
