Abstract

Turrilithus latericioides gen. et sp. nov. (Prymnesiophyceae) is described from scanning electron microscopy studies of filtered water samples collected from the Atlantic Ocean (June 1982) and the Mediterranean Sea (September 1986 and February 1988). The coccolith of this new species is characterized by the possession of a four-sided, tower-shaped appendix constructed from quadrangular plates, and was confirmed as calcium carbonate by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The taxonomic position of this species is considered and its affinity to other living and fossil forms discussed.
