Abstract

Nitrato, chloro, oxalato and sulphato complexes of neptunium(VI), and oxalato and sulphato complexes of neptunium(V), can be extracted from aqueous acid solution by methyldioctylamine in chloroform. No extraction of either neptunium (V) or (VI) could be detected from aqueous solutions containing acetic, formic, citric or perchloric acids. These results are discussed in terms of the known complexing behavior of these oxidation states of neptunium. The application of the amine extraction technique in the study of complex formation in aqueous solution is discussed; unambiguous identification of anionic complexes is only possible when the relevant stability constants are large.
