Abstract

Compounds of the type NaLnO 2 were prepared by reacting lanthanide oxides and metals with Na 2CO 3, Na 2O 2 or Na 2O in the solid state. Their symmetries were studied and compared with those formed from reaction of the oxides with liquid sodium metal. The previously unknown, tetragonal, NaCeO 2 was prepared and shown to have the α LiFeO 2 structure. Cubic forms of the oxides NaNdO 2, NaSmO 2, NaEuO 2 and NaGdO 2 were also prepared for the first time.
