Abstract
In many countries, railway companies and Interlocking manufacturers are designing computerized interlockings· ACEC, in Belgium, is developing a system based on a triple hardware redundancy of the signal box computers and double hardware redundancy for the lineside equipments. The system works in a macro-synchronal way with periodical data comparisons between the centralized computers. The lineside equipment control is based on an optical cable fault-tolerant network. Modularity was the leading idea for the whole development and problems have been splitted in terms of safe and non safe functions, defining two levels for the computers. Advanced technologies in optical transmission, 16 bits multiprocessor architecture and modular software have been choosen to develop an up-to-date equipment, in the aim of highest safety and reliability.
