The Meaning of Heritage and Communal Life: A Case Study of a Jeju Village

Abstract

이 논문은 제주의 마을만들기 사례 가운데 하나를 중심으로 하여 공동체를 보 전하고 재활성화하는 과정에서 유산(heritage이가 어떤 역할을 하는지 밝히고자 한다. 유산 개념의 의미는 점차 확대되어가는 추세에 있으며, 현재는 인류학자들이 생각하는 물질문화는 물론 무형문화 유산이라고 불리는 비물질적인 문화적 표현 전반을 아우르게 되었다. 그 결과 유산 보전과 강화를 위한 실천들이 현대 문화 생활에서 차지하는 비중이 커지게 되었고, 투자 대상으로서도 중요해졌을 뿐만 아니라 무엇이 보전되어야 하고, 어떻게 재현되어야 하며, 무엇을 기억하고 기록하며 삭제해야할 것인지를 둘러싼 정치적 논쟁도 격화되고 있다. 유산 개념은 개인과 공동체의 정체성에서도 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하며, 이러한 현실을 부각시키기 위해 유산화(heritigization)라는 개념이 사용되고 있다. 이러한 분석틀 속에서 바라 볼 때 제주의 마을 만들기 프로젝트에서도 유산이라는 개념은 중요한 비중을 차지하는 것을 발견할 수 있다. 특히 다크 투어리즘이나 생태 관광 등 새로운 경향의 관광과 결합하여, 문화적 유산과 역사적 유산, 그리고 자연적 유산은 모두 각 마을의 긍지를 고취시키고, 공동자원을 (재)창출하며, 공통의 미래를 창조하는데 중요한 역할을 하게 된다. 이 논문은 근대의 유산 그 자체를 하나의 커먼즈로 보아야 하며, 자연과 문화, 문화와 경제 등의 근대 인식론적 이분법을 넘어설 필요가 있음을 제주 마을의 사례를 통해 보여주고자 한다.This study investigates the role of heritage in preserving and revitalizing a community, focusing on “village making projects” on Jeju Island, South Korea. Over time, the concept of heritage has expanded to comprise the entirety of what anthropologists call material culture, whereas immaterial cultural manifestations are now termed intangible heritage. Consequently, the practice of heritage preservation and enhancement has become prominent in contemporary cultural life, both as a focus of investment and a source of political debate around what is to be preserved, represented, remembered, documented, or erased. The concept of heritage is central to the sense of identity of individuals and communities; it configured importantly in the village making projects in Jeju as well. Combined with new trends in tourism, including dark tourism and “eco-tourism”, both cultural/historical and natural heritages have become focal points for forging local pride in one’s own village and for striving for the (re)creation of common resources and, therefore, a common future. By examining the interplay between identity, community, heritage, and the commons, this paper will argue for the need to approach heritage itself as a commons, disregarding modern epistemic divisions between nature and culture, objects and humans, culture and economy.
