Abstract
This is a review of research carried out under sponsorship of the Electric Power Research Institute, Palo Alto, California, on the detection and mapping of surface cracks by photothermal radiometric imaging (PRI), radiometric emissivity imaging (REI), and optical scanning (OS). PRI can detect cracks just below the surface as well as surface cracks but is limited to “off-line” testing. REI and OS, while detecting only surface cracks, have been used to map cracks on rapidly rotating surfaces. Methods have been found for minimizing a “blemish noise” problem that exists in PRI and REI.
