Abstract

A study has been made of the kinetics and mechanism of polycarbonate (PC) films and blocks in aqueous potassium hydroxide solutions. The effective rate constants and the activation energy for the process were ascertained as well as the mechanism of ether bond hydrolysis in PC. Prolonged exposure of PC to potassium hydroxide does not result in any significant change in the mechanical or dielectrical properties of the polymer, which is consistent with the found mechanism of hydrolysis.
