Abstract

The infrared spcetrum of Th(OH)/sub 4/ was measured using the KBr pressed-pellet and the NuJol mull techniques in the range 8 to 15 mu and 2 to 15.5 mu , respectively. The results are tabulated and compared with those previously obtained. The peaks observed are discussed in connection with the symmetry of the molecular structure. (B.O.G.) l403 Diffuse reflectance measurements were made on powdered uranium dioxide samples to which varying amounts of excess oxygen were added. The principal purpose was to demonstrate that the optical constants and the description of the effects of excess oxygen on the absorption coefficient, which were previously derived from studies of thin films of UC/sub 2/, apply also to bulk material. The reflectance method is rather insensitive for highly absorbing material, but it is believed that the objective was achieved. The characteristics of the reflectance method that tend to limit its easily useful application to material with small absorption coefficients are discussed briefly. (auth)
