Abstract

Chinese settlements in Lasem along the north coast of Java were the result of trading activities. The open-mindedness of Javanese people in coastal areas led to acculturation process between Javanese locals and Chinese immigrants that formed a new culture, including the architecture of Chinese-style houses in Lasem. The Chinese-style houses’ architecture has specific characteristics as the result of the cultural blend. This study aims to identify these characteristics, specifically the characteristics of Javanese architecture in the architecture of Chinese-style houses in Lasem. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive method by aligning the acculturation theories with the architecture of Chinese-style houses in Lasem. The study concludes that there was a process of acculturation between Javanese and Chinese architecture that can be found in the ornaments, materials, and layout.
