Abstract
Summary Attempts have been made to find the causes of the bacterial biomass decline in the soil, following a heavy slurry application. It was found that in well aerated soil samples, not covered with plants and incubated under laboratory conditions, this effect was weaker than that under field conditions. A decline in the biomass was a by-effect preceded by its increase; it was not a result of overgrowth of fungi, release of significant amounts of free ammonia or changes in free phenol concentration. It might be partially limited by moisture increase in soil.
