Abstract

A method of estimating safety indices based on the reliability theory has been developed for the purpose of providing a rational basis for controlling the adjacent blasting to assure the safety of tunnel linings. As a result of applying this method to some actual cases it has been proved that the safety can be estimated more rationally and quantitatively by this method than by conventional methods. The limiting values of safety indices for the occurrence of cracks were estimated to be 2 for the value of Cornell's β factor, 10–2 to 10–1 for the value of the failure probability Pf and 1 for the value of the concurrent safety factor ν*.
