Abstract

The preservation of the quilombola culture and its organization are directly linked to the use of the territory. The legal right to the land where their ancestors began to write their history is essential for this maintenance. This article aims to deepen the understanding about the territory and its importance to the remaining communities of quilombolas. The methodology is marked by the revision of the most pertinent literature on the territory, identity and the remaining communities of quilombo, thus presenting a bibliographic research. The territory of the remnants of quilombo is used to ensure its physical, social, economic and cultural reproduction, because it is in it that conflicts, social relations, human passions take place, besides being a basic element in the formulation of policies aimed at these social actors. Even if the importance of the immaterial dimension is shown, this symbolism needs to be materialized in some space, that is, the territory cannot be understood without a material basis.
