Abstract

It has been reported that Qβ RNA-directed RNA synthesis by Qβ replicase requires two host-specific factors, HF I and HF II. While HF I is a specific protein, a variety of basic proteins show HF II activity. We offer evidence that the requirement for HF II is due to an inhibitor present in certain Qβ RNA preparations and that this inhibitor is counteracted by basic proteins.
