Abstract
The IEEE Standard Ontologies for Robotics and Automation, IEEE Standard P1872, was approved by the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Standards Board on 16 February 2015. After starting as a study group in early 2011, a working group (WG) was formed in November 2011. In a relatively short span of three years, the draft standard was submitted in late 2014 to the IEEE-SA before it was approved as a formal standard in February 2015. The standard defines a core ontology that specifies the most general concepts, relations, and axioms of robotics and automation. It is intended as a reference for knowledge representation and reasoning in robots as well as a formal reference vocabulary for communicating knowledge between robots and humans.
