Abstract

AbstractThe Antiquities Conservation Department at the ]. Paul Getty Museum recently completed a computer image enhancement project. The initial image was taken from an original polychromy design on a lekanis, or traditional Creek footbath, dating from the late 4th century BC. Computer imaging technology was used to reexamine polychromed areas of the lekanis which were difficult to interpret due to fading or wear. The scanning process and enhancement functions used on the lekanis are described, as well as a basic overview of common enhancement functions and how they work.
