Abstract

Food regulation in Australia has a long history, with the first pieces of food law introduced in Victoria and NSW in the early 1800s. The system has evolved since this time to one involving all jurisdictions and Commonwealth bodies, including the binational body Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). FSANZ has also evolved since it began life as the National Food Authority. While the system is complex (and this brings with it some confusion about roles and responsibilities), it is the complexity of the system that has led to the high level of food safety in Australia and New Zealand.
