Abstract

Evaluating real and alleged reactions to foods that may be allergic or non-allergic can be challenging; therefore knowledge of food intolerances and related conditions is necessary. Pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of a variety of non-IgE food-mediated diseases are discussed in this article, as well as several uncommon IgE-mediated food allergies. In many instances, there is a paucity of definitive studies to prove food intolerance diseases. Dietary alteration alone may be diagnostic and therapeutic when all other conditions are ruled out. These conditions are important considerations when evaluating a patient with a history of a food reaction.
