Abstract

In his important article Some old Chinese loan words in the Tai languages (see Bibliography p. 298) Li Fang-Kuei has treated the fate of certain Chinese cyclic terms, the twelve so-called ti-chih or Earthly Branches, as loan words in Tai. These terms are interesting among other reasons because of the problems they pose in connection with the development of final stops and fricatives in Chinese. Li suggests one solution.
