Abstract

The purpose of the article is to reveal the coverage of the cultural and educational life of the Ukrainian population of the Drogobych County in the columns of the newspaper “Homin Baseinu”/“Homin Krayu” (1937 – 1938). The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, systematicity, authorial objectivity, as well as methods of external and internal criticism of historical sources. Scientific novelty: for the first time in historical science and press studies, the reception of the cultural and educational life of Drogobych County in the newspaper “Homin Baseinu”/“Homin Krayu” (1937 – 1938) was analyzed. Conclusions. So, the cultural and educational life of Drohobychchyna is most fully covered in the newspaper “Homin Baseinu”/“Homin Krayu”. The materials presented in the magazine can be divided into the following thematic groups: 1) educational life in certain settlements: Boryslav, Drohobych, the villages of Modrych, Solets, Bolekhivtsi, Tustanovichi, Solonsko, Voroblevychi, Unyatichi, Lishnya, Luzhok Dolishniy, Dobrivlyany, Dobrohostiv, etc.; 2) activities of individual organizations and their branches in the cities and villages of Drogobych County: UPT “Ridna Shkola” (Native School), “Prosvita” (Education), “Silskyi Hospodar” (Village Master), “Soyuz Ukrainok” (Ukrainian Women's Union), “Robitnycha Hromada” (Workers’ Community), etc.; 3) celebration of the anniversaries of historical events (battle near Kruty, Act of Zluka UNR and ZUNR, execution near Bazar, etc.) and historical heroes - geniuses of the Ukrainian nation: Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko, Lesya Ukrainka; 4) literary, choral and theatrical life of Drohobychchyna (literary evenings, concerts of the Boyan Drohobytskyi Choir, Dmytro Kotko’s Choir, performances of the “Zagrava” theater, etc.). It should be noted that Zenon Kossak, a well-known figure of the OUN, was the author of an enlightening article about the battle near Kruty in one of the editions of the newspaper “Homin Baseinu”. Regarding the educational work of the “Workers’ Community” society, the newspaper's editorial board expressed reprehensible characteristics, considering the left-wing nature of the ideology and activities of this organization. In general, these posts contain the exact dates of certain events, numerous names and surnames of educational figures, the names and content of cultural events held in Drohobych region in 1937 – 1938.
