Abstract

In this study, we conducted research to confirm that the emotional experience in daily life depends on the concept of well-being that individuals emphasize. Well-being can be composed of four concepts: the experience of pleasure(EP), the avoidance of negative experience(ANE), self-development, and the contribution to others(CO). A total of 609 participants responded to the belief about the well-being concept scale and the PANAS Expanded Form questions. As a result of correlation analysis, it was found that people who emphasized the ANE experienced more varied and stronger negative emotions, paradoxically. On the other hand, those who emphasized self-development experienced fewer negative emotions and experienced broader and stronger positive emotions. The results of this study suggest that it may be more appropriate to pursue eudaimonic well-being than hedonic well-being for a healthy life.
