Abstract

Objective To observe the curative effect of using mitomycin C in pterygium excision with autologous limbus stem cell transplantation. Methods A total of 241 cases (317eyes)were randomly divided into two groups,0.02% MMC cotton patch was putting on the sclera for 4 minutes during the operation in 183 eyes of MMC group (the primary pterygium 123 eyes, the recurrent pterygium 60 eyes); The control group 134 eyes (the primary pterygium 94 eyes, the recurrent pterygium 40 eyes) did not use any medication. All patients were followed up for12-24 months to observe the recrudescence and complications after surgery. Results The recurrence rate in MMC group was fewer than that of control group, the statistical difference was more significant in the re current pterygium (P <0.01) than that in the primary pterygium (P <0.05).There was no statistical difference of complications between the 2 groups (P >0.05).Conclusions The application of 0.02%MMC during the pterygium excision with autologous limbus stem cell transplantation can more reduce the recurrence rate of pterygium, especially for the recurrent pterygium. There is no side effect.
