Abstract

Objective To compare the clinical effects of Pterygium excision and autologous corneal limbal stem cell tran splantation combined with pterygium excision on primary pterygium. Methods Eighty-three patients(92 eyes) with primary pterygium were chose,41 patients(46 eyes)in group A were given simple pterygium excision, with MMC used during the operation,42 patients(46 eyes)in group B were given autologous corneal limbal stem cell transplantation combined with pterygium excision. The post-operative follow-up periods ranged from 6-12 months. The corneal wouds healing, corneal astigmia and the recurrent rate of the two groups were compared. Results The average corneal wouds healing time was 7. 34 d in group A and 6. 32 d in group B,there was significant difference between the two groups( P﹤0. 05 ). There was no significant difference in the corneal astigmia degree between the two groups at 3 months after operation( P﹥0. 05). The recurrent rate was 17. 4%(8 eyes)in group A and 4. 3%(2 eyes)in group B,there was significant difference between the two groups( P﹤0. 05 ). Conclusions The method of pterygium excision combined with autologous corneal limbal stem cell transplantation is superior to single pterygium excision. Key words: Pterygium ; Corneal limbal stem cell transplantation ; Mitomycin C ( MMC )
