Naval Engineers JournalVolume 79, Issue 3 p. 369-375 The ASNE Gold Medal Award Lietutenant Commander John H. Boyd Jr., Lietutenant Commander John H. Boyd Jr. USN John Huntley Boyd, Jr. was born in Michigan in 1931, son of Dr. and Mrs. John H. Boyd. He was raised in Trenton, Michigan, and attended public schools there. Following high school, he entered the U. S. Naval Academy in 1949, graduating in 1953. He served in engineering billets in USS GAINARD (DD706) and USS JOHN S. McCAIN (DL3); was designated Engineering Duty Officer in 1955. Mr. Boyd attended the Naval Construction and Engineering Course at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1956–59; and was awarded the Master's Degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and the Degree of Naval Engineer by MIT. Subsequently, he served in the Long Beach Naval Shipyard, U. S. Naval Ship Repair Facility, Guam, and on the staff of Commander Service Squadron THREE, homeported in Sasebo, Japan. Since August 1966, he has served on the staff of Commander Service Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet. Lieutenant Commander Boyd is married to the former Mary-Elizabeth Hogan of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and is the father of four children.Search for more papers by this author Lietutenant Commander John H.
