After graduation he served on Coast Guard Cutters as Deck Officer, Student Engineer, and Engineer Officer. He was assigned to the postgraduate course in Naval Construction and Marine Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1957, graduating in 1960 with a Master of Science degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, and the degree of Naval Engineer.
