Abstract
The author contrasts automatic inspection methods with human inspection following electromagnetic, neutron or ultrasonic examination of components. He considers the temporal, spatial and intensity characteristics involved and illustrates them in terms of the operation of a tv camera. He considers some typical examples of instances where automatic inspection is superior and discusses a few of the methods employed in feature analysis in general terms.
