Abstract

The reproducibility of published data on the distribution of hydrochloric acid in water between tri- n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and aqueous solutions of the acid is critically examined. The activity of TBP in equilibrium with 0–11·5 M HCl at 25°C has been derived by application of the Gibbs-Duhem equation to the smoothed distribution data, and compared with the activity of TBP in equilibrium with aqueous nitric acid.
