Abstract

1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane (tetrachloroethane) (CAS No. 79-34-5) is a colorless to pale-yellow liquid with a chloroform-like odor that is a chlorinated derivative of ethane that is soluble in water and most organic solvents. It has a molecular formula of C2H2Cl4 and a molecular weight of 167.8g/mol. Tetrachloroethane was commonly used as an intermediate in the manufacture of trichloroethylene tetrachloroethylene, and 1,2-dichloroethylene. Because of its toxicity, it is no longer commercially produced and is only found in closed systems as an intermediate in the production of other chlorinated hydrocarbons; hence, exposure is now minimal. The chemical is moderately acutely toxic and induces skin, eye, and mucosal irritation. Studies indicate that the liver is the principal target organ, and long-term exposures produce hepatocellular carcinomas in mice.
