Abstract
1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane (tetrachloroethane) (CAS No. 79-34-5) is a colorless to pale-yellow liquid with a chloroform-like odor that is soluble in water and most organic solvents. Tetrachloroethane is no longer commercially produced and is only found in closed systems as an intermediate in the production of other chlorinated hydrocarbons; hence, exposure is now minimal. The chemical is moderately acutely toxic and induces skin, eye, and mucosal irritation. Studies indicate that the liver is the principal target organ, and long-term exposures produce hepatocellular carcinomas in mice.
