Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the classification, description, hosts, key developments, diagnostic techniques, and diagnostic reagents for the Teschen disease virus. The disease is found in wild and domestic swine. and is endemic in Central Europe and parts of Africa. The Talfan disease is also found in Western Europe, North America, and Australia. Other enteroviruses are thought to have worldwide distribution. The virulent Teschen disease was reported initially in Central Europe over 50 years ago. The less virulent Talfan disease became evident in Western Europe about 25 years later. Fluorescent antibody is a preferred diagnostic technique for the detection of the virus. Virus neutralization is the best for serotyping, but some cross-reactivity occurs while detecting the virus through that method.
