Western and central Europe and North America continues to advance towards ending AIDS, but the region still contains 2.3 million people living with HIV [1.9 million–2.6 million]. From 2010 to 2021, new infections declined by 16% and AIDS-related deaths decreased by 34%. Gay men and other men who have sex with men accounted for 68% of new HIV diagnoses in the United States of America in 2020, and 64% in the western and central Europe and North America region in 2021 (1). In the United States, new HIV diagnoses in 2014–2018 increased among people who inject drugs for the first time in 20 years, and drug overdose deaths escalated to more than 108 000 in 2021 (2, 3).
