Abstract
Ion-exchange equilibria of bivalent transition metal ions (Mn 2+, Co 2+, Ni 2+, Cu 2+, Zn 2+ and Cd 2+)/H + systems have been studied at 30, 45 and 60°C on C-SbA as a cation exchanger. The exchange isotherms have been measured for both forward and reverse reactions with a solution ionic strength of 0.1 by the batch technique. The isotherms showed S-shaped curves for each ion-exchange system except Cd 2+/H +. Selectivity coefficients (log scale) vary with the equivalent fraction ( X M ) of transition metal ion in the exchanger and give linear functions against X M in a range from 0 to 0.5. The selectivity sequence on “zero loading” shows Ni 2+ < Mn 2+ < Zn 2+ < Co 2+ < Cu 2+ < Cd 2+. Overall and hypothetical (zero loading) thermodynamic data are evaluated.
