Abstract

In 1988, 39% of Japanese cities had sewerage systems, and many facilities (such as treatment plants, pumping stations, etc.) have been and will be built. Supervisory control and data acquisition systems are constantly improving, and some of the treatment facilities are intended to be unstaffed and will be supervised and controlled from a remote control center. This trend will continue towards more efficient overall management, and many more facilities will be unstaffed. Signal and data transmissions between the control center and remotely-controlled facilities are necessary, and most of the signal and data transmission lines are part of the public telephone system. At present, some local governments are considering installing their own optical fiber networks in sewerage pipes, and one of these is already in operation. These networks are expected to provide greater security, safety, and economy.
