Abstract
Nitrification releases protons which must be buffered by sewage. Excess acid destroys activated sludge. Remedies are denitrification, limiting nitrification and/or dosage of alkali. Alkali cause shifts in carbonate equilibria and may result in calcite precipitation. Exact dosage control and careful choice of alkali are required.
