Abstract

Random terpolymers of styrene with acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate and their fractions prepared by gradual precipitation under conditions of separation with respect to molecular weight have been investigated by viscosimetric and light scattering methods. The data obtained in 1,4-dioxan, toluene, chloroform, THF, methyl ethyl ketone and DMF at 30±0·1° provide a basis for determination of constants K v and a in Mark-Kuhn-Houwink equations. By means of a Krevelen [1] extrapolation of the values in question the value of K θ has for the first time been determined ( K θ =9·08×10 −2 ml/g), and the unperturbed dimensions of the copolymer macromolecules have been calculated. It was found that no appreciable short-range interactions take place in the copolymers containing up to 23 mole% acrylonitrile and the behaviour of the macromolecules in solution is determined mainly by long-range interactions.
