Abstract
This chapter relates and discusses an experience in specifying the benchmark case the Steam-Boiler in formal specification. Several such specifications have been published that use various methods and languages but none used Specification and Description Language (SDL). The chapter explains how the basic features of SDL are either guidelines or constraints. The structural decomposition of the system is a basis for the dynamic SDL specification. The Boiler System structure and main justifications are evoked, and treatment for the dynamic aspects is included in the chapter. The major difficulties are encountered in working out the SDL specification, and some additional facilities that make the specification process easier and improve the readability of the SDL documents, with little disruption of the original SDL syntax or semantics are proposed in the chapter. The SDT Tool from Telelogic is used to complete the whole analysis, specification, designs, coding, and simulation process.
