Abstract

In this chapter, a handover functional model and corresponding functionality description in Specification Description Language (SDL) for the Intelligent Network (IN)/Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) concept for third-generation mobile systems protocol development are presented. The model is based on the ETSI NA-61301 handover functional model. The chapter focuses on the introduction and specification of necessary functional entities for control and execution of the switching function for handover service provisioning. The chapter describes the mapping methodology of the handover IN/UMTS model, functional entities, and their behavior to SDL mechanisms. The design methodology, description of IN/UMTS handover model, and functionality for the cases of hard and soft without macrodiversity handover, using SDL and message sequence chart (MSC) are presented in the chapter. The SDT tool and SDL are used for the model description, functionality specification, and simulation. The mapping methodology onto SDL mechanisms is described in the chapter, and SDL object oriented properties are used to satisfy the target system modeling requirements for consistency, extendibility, and reusability of the modules.
