Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of the development and use of Specification Description Language (SDL) in ITU-T, and the plans for SDL. The chapter discusses a short history of SDL, the use of SDL within ITU-T and its members, the status of the standards, the role of the SDL Forum Society, and the plans for SDL-2000. The chapter considers the use of message sequence chart (MSC) in relation to the use of SDL. The ITU-T is taking the lead in standards for the global information infrastructure (GII). Within this area, SG10 has a role to play in providing languages and architectures, and it has drafted project plans for several projects, including one for object-oriented environments for which Q.6/10 is nominated as the lead body. The objective is to provide sound technologies for the GII reference descriptions that allow these descriptions to contain objects that can specialize and can be reused. The project description includes the study of special object features required by GII, enhancement of the SDL+ framework methodology, provisions of an example of the use of the methodology on a GII element, outline of tool requirements with a feasibility demonstration, and guidelines on the use for good quality descriptions.
