Abstract

This article examines the trends in the development and deployment of weapons systems for use in space—both the ‘conventional’ and the more exotic space weapon technologies for antisatellite operations and ballistic missile defence. The feasibility of such weapons is assessed and the prospects for future development and deployment considered. The political and strategic implications of these trends are such that there is an urgent need for measures to slow down, or stop, the militarization of space.
